ABOUT OUR FILMS - WHAT REALLY IS A HIGHLIGHTS FILM AND HOW IS IT DIFFERENT FOM A FULL FEATURE FILM ?

Now that you may have seen some sample films from our past weddings portfolio page we have captured in Hawaii and other destinations, but still would like differences explained, here is a full article for you!

A Wedding Highlight Film is much more than just a collection of wedding clips set to music, vows and speeches. It is a short, cinematic, emotionally driven and artistically curated film that tells the story of a couple and feeling of the wedding day—capturing the people, atmosphere, laughter, excitement, relationships, details, and special moments that made the day uniquely and a true authentic representation of who the Couple is.

A Wedding Highlight Film typically includes the story of the day in a fast paced style. Rather than documenting every event from beginning to end in sequence, a highlight film carefully selects the strongest impactful moments to create a condensed story and isn’t necessary in order of the events that happened on the wedding day.

It recaps and jumps quickly between getting ready, the ceremony, portraits, cocktail hour, reception, and dancing while maintaining a natural narrative, the cuts are filmed and edited in post intentionally to evoke emotion and create a story with the wedding day.

Highlight Films (especially the 7min Highlight Film) incorporate:

• Wedding vows

• Personal letters or notes

• Ceremony readings

• Toasts and speeches

• The officiant's words

• A private conversation between the couple

• Parents or friends speaking about the couple

These audio elements can be layered over images from completely different moments of the day, creating a much more cinematic exciting and emotional experience.

Cinematic visual storytelling in our wedding films often emphasize beautiful composition and intentional camera movement rather than simply recording what happens.

This can include:

• Wide establishing shots of the venue

• Close-up details of the rings, invitations, flowers, dress, and décor

• Emotional reactions from family and friends

• Slow-motion movement when appropriate

• Smooth gimbal or handheld camera work

• Creative angles and perspective

• Natural light and intentional lighting

• Drone footage when permitted and appropriate

The goal is for the film to feel like a mini movie rather than a surveillance-style recording of the wedding in sequential order.

A good highlight film, is when all the little moments matter, and the focus is on capturing the little moments that make up for the Love story of the Couple.

While a 4-minute Highlight Film runtime sounds short, and one would expect the price to be low but the truth is, wedding videography is rarely priced by the minute. Instead, the final price is determined by the hours of on-site filming and the dozens of hours required for post-production editing.

4 minutes ($450 add-on to any package /  $1800 Stand Alone)A short, highly cinematic "teaser" or social-media-friendly highlight.

7 minutes ($750 add-on to any package /  $2400 Stand Alone)A very popular length for a polished wedding highlight film. Long enough to tell a meaningful story without becoming repetitive.

15 minutes ($950 add-on to any package /  $3200 Stand Alone)A more substantial cinematic highlight with additional speeches, vows, relationships, and reception coverage.A longer feature-style highlight that allows considerably more of the wedding day and spoken audio to remain in the film.

Many wedding filmmakers now offer both a short highlight film and longer documentary edits rather than trying to make one video serve every purpose.

30-45 FEATURE FILMS ($3800 add-on to any package /  $5500 Stand Alone)

Because a 45-minute feature film is an exceptionally long deliverable—far exceeding the standard 4-to-7-minute cinematic highlight reels—it requires a premium "hybrid" package, meaning 2-3 filmmakers are required to film throughout the day. This is why the price jumps up considerably. A photographer can easily shoot video clips throughout the day, while a feature film requires several camera angles throughout the day. This is the best option for those who want their entire ceremony, speeches, dances captured in full length.

WHAT IS THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN A SHORT AND A LONGER FILM

Highlight films show the mood, the vibe and beauty. Feature films show the actual words, vows, and full events. Highlight films use background music with small voice clips. Feature films use clean, professional recorded real-time sound from the day. Feature or documentary films are much longer often more than 45 minutes long.

In general, Highlight films move much faster, with focus on high energy and heavy weight on emotions and moments, while Feature films move slower to document the entire day. A highlight wedding film is a short, but highly curated custom cinematic video revealing the best moments of the day set to music and voice overs. In contrast, a feature film or documentary is a longer cut lasting 45+ minutes that includes most of the ceremony, complete vows, full speeches, and is put together as a more traditional chronological storytelling, recapturing how the day unfolded from getting ready to the last dance.

WHAT IS REALLY THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN 4MIN AND 7MIN HIGHLIGHT REEL

A 4-minute wedding film moves fast and shows only the best, high-energy moments with a punchy music track. A 7-minute or longer film lets the day breathe, using more natural sound and full vows or speeches to tell a deeper story.

The Story and flow of a 4-Minute Film is fast cuts, high energy, and a strict non-sequential “loose” highlight reel style, much like movie trailers.

A 4 min Film is mostly music-driven with very short, quick voiceover clips. What you will see in a 4min Highlights film is typically only the main highlights like the first kiss and dance, wedding party fun moments, and party vibes. The location of the wedding is hinted rather than detailed. We often begin our films with a drone shot of the venue.

In contrast, a 7 min or longer film, becomes more “traditional” in the sense that we keep the order of the day a bit more in sequence and include partial ceremony moments. It is a slower pace, emotional depth, and space for more moments to unfold, Including longer parts of real vows, toasts, and emotional speeches.

In a 7 min or more film you will get everything a 4 min film has but overall more guest reactions, quiet looks and private moments between the couple, and complete scene moments.

ABOUT MUSIC FOR OUR FILMS

Music remains an important part of a highlight film, but in professionally produced films it is generally carefully integrated with the story and natural audio.

The music might begin quietly while establishing the morning, build during the ceremony, become more energetic during the reception, and finish with a memorable emotional moment.

Professional Wedding filmmakers need to use properly licensed music rather than simply dropping a popular current Billboard Hot 100 copyrighted song into the film.

A highlight film isn't a 45-minute long wedding video compressed into 7 minutes. The wedding filmmaker is constantly making creative decisions during the day about:

What should we see? What should we hear? What should we feel? What moments best represent this couple?

The editing moves backward and forward through the day to create a cohesive interesting and unique story. For example, you might hear the bride's vows while seeing footage of her getting ready, her parents watching her walk down the aisle, and the couple's portraits before or afterward.

That is what makes it storytelling one of a kind, rather than simple just documentation as the day unfolds.
